Toronto, May 16th, 2011 – PFLAG Canada raises the Pride flag in support of International Day Against Homophobia on Tuesday May 17th in communities across Canada.

PFLAG Canada launches an awareness campaign today in Toronto to help raise awareness of the support it offers all Canadians facing the challenges of sexual orientation and gender identity. The campaign idea dramatizes the hard-hitting truth that one third of suicides are committed by people who are gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender – six times the rate of the heterosexual population and most prevalent among youth.

“This campaign launches as we partner with Fondation Emergence to raise Pride Flags in communities across the country in recognition of International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia.  It represents an opportunity to outreach to those in need, encourage acceptance  and build on our announcement last month to launch the first national 24/7 LGBTQ-A support line, website and community network later this year.” said Cherie MacLeod, Executive Director, PFLAG Canada.

The campaign launches today in high profile Toronto public transit locations and print media through the generous support of the team at DraftFCB, Astral Media, CBS Outdoor, Metro, NOW Magazine and The Grid.  The creative idea by Santiago Fernandez-Concha and Braeden Laverty was recognized at the 2011 National Advertising Awards on May 6th.  “We thank the entire team at DraftFCB and our media partners for their passion to bring this breakthrough idea to reality so expediently.  In doing so, they have demonstrated their unconditional commitment to help us inspire change”, said Mark Childs, Marketing Board Director, PFLAG Canada.
