Gender Rights Bill: Start Over

Posted on March 23, 2011 by

CORRECTION: With the dissolution of Parliament and the federal election underway, bills currently before Parliament would have to be reintroduced in the new Parliament in order to pass them into legislation. An article in the CBC News Network, reports that private members bills, such as C-389, can be reintroduced at the same stage they were in when the election was called. Unfortunately, according to Bill Siksay, who introduced the bill, this is incorrect. Private member bills do not survive the dissolution of Parliament. We will have to go all way back to the House and start over. C-389, the bill to protect gender identity and gender expression, must be reintroduced in the House of Commons.

Gee, wouldn’t it be great if the CBC gave accurate reports about the legislative process? Is that too much to ask?
